《经济学人》(The Economist )是一份以报导新闻、国际关系为主的英文刊物,虽然它的发行方式更是周刊,但是《经济学人》以报纸自居, 因为它每一期除了提供分析与意见外,还试图报导整周发生的所有重要政经新闻。《经济学人》从1843年9月由创办人詹姆士.威尔逊首次发行 至今,全球发行量据报导约为每期1千300万份,其中有半数销往北美洲,20%在欧洲大陆,15%在英国,10%在亚洲。

科学家邓青云教(美籍)授获2011年沃尔夫化学奖

据沃尔夫奖(Wolf Prize)官方网站消息,美国罗切斯特大学化学工程系华人科学家邓青云(Ching W. Tang)教授荣获刚刚颁发的2011年沃尔夫化学奖。与他一同分享这一荣誉及10万美元奖金的是美国芝加哥大学的Stuart A. Rice和美国卡耐基·梅隆大学的Krzysztof Matyjaszewski。三人的获奖理由是“在化学合成及属性领域所作的深入、创造性的贡献,以及对于有机材料的理解”。据悉,邓青云教授是第一位荣获沃尔夫化学奖的华人。

始创于1976年的沃尔夫奖是国际最高学术大奖之一,由以色列的沃尔夫基金会颁发,在农业、化学、数学、医学、物理、艺术6个领域授奖。

除化学奖外,2011年沃尔夫奖还颁发了农业奖、医学奖、物理学奖和艺术奖。获奖者分别为——

农业奖:美国伊利诺伊大学香槟分校的Harris A. Lewin和美国华盛顿州立大学的James R. Cook。

医学奖:日本京都大学的山中伸弥和美国怀特黑德研究所的Rudolf Jaenisch。

物理学奖:德国卡尔斯鲁厄理工学院的Maximilian Haider、德国达姆施塔特理工大学的Harald Rose和德国尤利西研究中心的Knut Urban。

 

美国工程院院士邓青云博士简历:

邓青云(Ching W. Tang),现任美国罗切斯特大学化学工程系、化学系、物理天文学系“Doris Johns Cherry”教授。1947年出生于香港,于1970年在英属哥伦比亚大学获化学理学士学位,于1975年在康奈尔大学获物理化学博士学位。此后,他加入美国柯达公司研发部作为一名研究科学家,一直从事有机半导体材料和器件研究。2006年,邓青云博士因为其在有机发光二极管和异质结有机太阳能电池上取得的开创性成就而被选为美国工程院院士。现任美国物理学会会员,美国信息显示学会的会员。曾获美国柯达公司“杰出发明人”称号,并曾获美国柯达、美国信息显示学会、美国化学学会、罗切斯特知识产权法协会的多个奖项。邓青云博士于1987年发明的有机发光显示技术(Organic Light Emitting Display,OLED),是继阴极射线管(CRT)技术和液晶显示(LCD)技术之后的第三代显示技术的代表,在短短的十几年内得到了业界的广泛认可,被认为是“人类最理想的显示技术”。邓教授因此而被尊称为“OLED之父”。

邓青云博士目前的研究工作包括:有机光电器件研究;有机-金属和有机-有机异质结研究;有机发光显示技术的应用研究等。

百思买关闭所有中国门店 Best Buy brand shuts up shop in China and Turkey

Best Buy, the world’s largest electronics retailer by sales, is closing all of its branded stores in China, highlighting the resistance of Chinese shoppers to some western-style store experiences.

全球销售额最高的电器零售商——百思买(Best Buy)正关闭所有在中国的自有品牌门店,突显中国消费者对一些西式店内体验的抵制。

The retailer, which will continue to run 170 stores in China under the Five Star brand acquired five years ago, is also giving up an attempt to enter Turkey, with the closure of two trial-run stores opened in the past two years.

该零售商还将放弃进军土耳其的尝试,关闭过去两年内开张的两家试运行门店。在中国,它将继续经营5年前收购的五星电器(Five Star)品牌下的170家门店。

The company said in a statement that it would close all nine China stores that carry the Best Buy brand, one of the best known US retail marques, but one that has failed to catch on in China. It captured less than 1 per cent of the China market, analysts said, struggling to compete against the more agile and aggressive homegrown rivals Gome and Suning, which each have more than 1,000 branded stores in China.

Best Buy’s business model in the US, where the brand markets itself as providing a better service than its competitors, has not gone down well in China. “Best Buy believed it could grab market share in China by offering high-quality service and a good shopping experience,” says Torsten Stocker, retail analyst at Monitor Group. “But what determines Chinese consumers’ purchasing decisions is price, not service.”

百思买在美国的商业模式——在营销中定位于提供比竞争对手更好的服务,在中国遭遇了“水土不服”。摩立特集团(Monitor Group)零售分析师唐仕德(Torsten Stocker)表示:“百思买曾相信,它可以通过提供优质服务与良好的购物体验,来夺得中国市场的份额。但是,左右中国消费者购买决定的是价格,而非服务。”

Best Buy’s store strategy was also at odds with local habits. Chinese retailers generally divide up electronics and other large- ticket items by leading brands, rather than category, supported by sales staff working for the manufacturers rather than for the retailer.

百思买的门店策略也与中国本土习惯不符。中国零售商通常按领先品牌(而非种类)陈列电器及其它大件商品;销售人员通常为制造商(而非零售商)工作。

Home Depot and Kingfisher, the US and UK home improvement retailers, have also struggled with western- style sales models in China. In contrast, Chinese shoppers have enthusiastically embraced modern supermarkets and discount stores operated by leading international retailers including Walmart, Metro and Tesco.

美英家居建材零售商——家得宝(HomeDepot)与翠丰集团(Kingfisher)的西式销售模式在中国也遭遇了瓶颈。与此形成对比的是,中国消费者十分追捧沃尔玛(Walmart)、麦德龙(Metro)、特易购(Tesco)等领先国际零售商经营的现代超市与折扣店。

Dora Sahintürk, from Istanbul retail specialist AVM Mfi Partners, said Best Buy had suffered in Turkey from trying to compete on quality in a price-sensitive market.

中国与哈萨克斯坦达成一系列巨额交易 Kazakhstan embraces Chinese investment

Kazakhstan announced billions of dollars in deals with China on Tuesday, emphasising central Asia’s gradual shift from Moscow towards Beijing.

哈萨克斯坦周二宣布与中国达成巨额交易,突显中亚逐渐从莫斯科转向北京。

Meeting in Beijing on Tuesday, Kazakhstan’s president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and Chinese leader Hu Jintao signed a series of agreements including high-speed rail, uranium supplies and a $5bn energy infrastructure loan.

哈萨克斯坦总统努尔苏丹•纳扎尔巴耶夫(Nursultan Nazarbayev)周二在北京与中国国家主席胡锦涛会晤,双方签署了一系列协议,涵盖高速铁路、铀供应以及一笔50亿美元的能源基础设施贷款。

China’s investments in Kazakhstan have for years centred upon oil production – but Tuesday’s deals show Beijing’s reach now extends beyond the energy sector.

多年来,中国在哈萨克斯坦的投资一直聚焦于石油开采,但周二达成的交易显示,北京方面的触角现已伸到能源以外的行业。

Among the deals was a $1.7bn loan by China to Kazakhstan’s national welfare fund; a supply agreement for about 55,000 tonnes of Kazakh uranium to meet China’s increasing nuclear needs; and a memorandum of understanding for China’s Ministry of Railways to help construct an Astana-Almaty high-speed rail link.

Agreements were also reached about water quality controls for rivers that flow from western China into Kazakhstan, and on co- operation in the fertiliser sector. China sees this as important since it looks to its neighbour for a new source of food.

“China has become the real great power in the region,” says Shamil Midkhatovich Yenikeyeff, research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. “China represents the future [while] Russia represents the past . . .  China has an upper hand over Russia in terms of its cash power and in terms of effective implementation of large-scale projects.”

Kazakhstan has kept close ties with Russia since dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russian companies have many oil development contracts and share access to exploration acreage in the Caspian Sea. Russia’s pipelines are the chief conduit for Kazakh oil to world markets even as the country tries to diversify export routes.

自前苏联解体以来,哈萨克斯坦一直与俄罗斯保持着密切联系。俄罗斯企业拥有许多石油开发合同,还在里海勘探区域共享作业权。俄罗斯的输油管道是哈萨克石油通往世界市场的主要途径,即便哈萨克斯坦正试图实现出口渠道的多样化。

China and Russia are neck-and-neck in terms of bilateral trade with Kaz-akhstan, Kazakh customs data suggest.

China began acquiring oil assets in Kazakhstan in the late 1990s, securing a fresh source of energy on its doorstep to fuel growth and to reduce dependence on Middle East supplies. Chinese companies now have equity ownership of about a quarter of oil produced in the country, says research by Visor Capital.

中国从上世纪90年代末开始在哈萨克斯坦收购石油资产,在自己的“家门口”获得了一个新的能源来源,以便促进经济增长,减轻对中东石油的依赖。哈萨克斯坦投行Visor Capital的研究称,如今中国企业对哈萨克斯坦大约四分之一的石油产量拥有股权。

The central Asian nation is home to rich reserves of uranium, copper, gold and nickel – materials China needs for its economic boom. The uranium agreement signed on Tuesday will see Kazakhstan supply China with some 55,000 tonnes of the radioactive material, which is worth more than $8bn at current market prices. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

地处中亚的哈萨克斯坦拥有丰富的铀、铜、黄金和镍矿藏,这些都是中国实现经济繁荣所需的原材料。根据周二签署的铀供应协议,哈萨克斯坦将向中国供应大约5.5万吨这种放射性材料,按当前市场价格计算价值超过80亿美元。双方没有透露协议的具体条款。

China helped finance and build a pipeline to carry oil 1,000km from central Kazakhstan to its north-western frontier, opened in 2007. The pipeline will span Kaz-akhstan and provide China with access to oil resources in the Caspian Sea.

The financial crisis gave China an opportunity to strengthen its grip on Kazakh oil and to expand into the broader economy.

In 2009, China lent KazMunaigas, Kazakhstan’s state oil company, $5bn against future oil. Separately, China lent the Development Bank of Kaz-akhstan $5bn for transport, telecommunications and agriculture projects.

阿里巴巴两高管引咎辞职 Alibaba chiefs go in wake of online shopfront frauds

Alibaba.com, the world’s largest online marketplace for trade between businesses, has replaced its chief executive after sales staff were found to have helped set up fraudulent online shopfronts.

在发现销售人员帮助创建了欺诈性网店后,全球最大的企业间在线交易平台——阿里巴巴(Alibaba.com)更换了两位高管。

David Wei, chief executive, and Elvis Lee, chief operating officer, both resigned on Monday to take responsibility for the “systemic breakdown in our company’s culture of integrity”, Alibaba said.

阿里巴巴表示,阿里巴巴B2B公司首席执行官卫哲(David Wei)与首席运营官李旭辉(Elvis Lee)已于周一双双辞职,以为“我们公司诚信文化的全面崩溃”负责。

The company said an internal investigation found that more than 2,000 of its “China Gold Suppliers” – companies certified by Alibaba as legitimate, credible businesses – had engaged in fraud against buyers, and that about 100 field sales people had allowed the fraudsters to evade its verification measures.

阿里巴巴表示,一项内部调查发现,在其“中国金牌供应商(China Gold Supplier)”中——经过阿里巴巴认证的合法可信的企业,超过2000家参与了对买家的欺诈,且约有100名现场销售人员帮助行骗者逃避了阿里巴巴的稽核措施。

The allegedly fraudulent online shops, set up in 2009 and 2010, account for less than 1.1 per cent and 0.8 per cent of Alibaba’s total Gold Suppliers signed up during those two years respectively.

这些涉嫌欺诈的网店成立于2009与2010年,不到这两年间阿里巴巴签约金牌供应商总数的1.1%与0.8%。

The drastic response of changing top management highlights how vulnerable e-commerce companies are to doubts that they can be relied on to secure supplier quality and honesty.

更换管理层的严厉回应,突显出电子商务公司多么容易受到下述怀疑的影响:买家能否依赖它们确保供应商的质量与诚信。

John Spelich, Alibaba spokesman, said: “This is very painful for us. The founders are very upset”.

Jonathan Lu, chief executive of Taobao, Alibaba Group’s unlisted consumer e-commerce affiliate, has replaced Mr Wei. Mr Lu will retain his position at Taobao.

阿里巴巴集团(Alibaba Group)未上市消费者电子商务附属企业淘宝(Taobao)的首席执行官陆兆禧(Jonathan Lu)已取代卫哲,出任CEO一职。但他将保留在淘宝的职位。

Analysts said Mr Lu could use his experience in fighting fraud on Taobao at Alibaba.

Chen Shousong, an e-commerce expert at Analysys, the internet research group in Beijing said: “At Taobao, Mr Lu has broadened the benchmarks by which sellers are judged to include user experience. That can also be used for Alibaba.com”.

北京互联网研究集团易观国际(Analysys)的电子商务专家陈寿松表示:“在淘宝,陆兆禧扩大了判断卖家信誉的基准,将用户体验纳入了进来。这也可以用于阿里巴巴。”

Alibaba had made public last year that fraud had been discovered on the site, but it had not said before that staff were involved. The problems come as the company is on an aggressive expansion path. Its headcount increased by almost one-third over the past year from 11,700 to close to 14,000.

In the third quarter of 2010, revenues grew 40 per cent over the same period in 2009 to Rmb1.4bn ($213m). As of September 30, it had more than 56m registered users and 750,000 paying members.

Alibaba.com said it had started to fight fraud as soon as it discovered the problem last year, and the number of fraudulent supplier accounts had started going down.

中国就误捕日本外交官道歉

日本内阁官房长官枝野幸男周一(2月21日)就中国沈阳警方在镇压当地“茉莉花革命”事件时逮捕一名日本外交官提出抗议。
他说,中方已就此道歉,并说将适当辅导有关部门。
这名日本驻沈阳领事馆的外交官在周日当地发生“茉莉花革命”行动时前往察看日本人安全情况时被捕并被关押近一小时后获释。
沈阳警方说,不知道此人是日本外交官。但沈阳日本领事馆还是向辽宁省外事办公室提出“事件令人遗憾”的交涉。
